In 2013, Oana McBride’s friend Elsie was diagnosed with cancer. For Elsie, home care wasn’t an option so she was place in a nursing home. Elsie was a former nurse and was very aware of the need for a better palliative care facility. It was Oana’s final promise to Elsie that led Oana to attend a women’s seminar and ask if Lions Club International was able to help her in achieving Elsie’s dream. Endless fundraisers and meetings led to a petition of over 10,000 signatures being presented to NSW Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard, in late 2019.

Elsie’s dream came true when a dedicated Palliative Care Unit opened in Gosford in 2021, and now another will open at Wyong Hospital very soon!
