Winter time… where spending Sunday mornings curled up under your doona and enjoying a nice warm cup of coffee is the norm. Then the age-old question pops in your head, what should we have for dinner tonight… We have found the best recipes to warm up hungry bellies and add some warmth to your kitchen on a cold winter’s day.

  1. Pumpkin Soup

A simple dish that wins the hearts of Australian families every winter, Pumpkin soup is not only delicious but also affordable. Soup is a great meal to sneak extra veggies in without the kids knowing… Pumpkin Soup is best enjoyed in winter as pumpkin is one of many vegetables that thrive in winter.

Check out Donna Hay’s no fuss,  no-peel roasted pumpkin soup recipe below.

Pumpkin soup is served best with yummy sourdough bread (we recommend The Roasted Berry‘s sourdough – baked fresh daily).

  1. Shepherd’s Pie

A comfort food for many, nothing beats a homemade Shepherd’s Pie. Although the names are usually used interchangeably, there is a difference between Cottage Pie and Shepherd’s Pie; cottage pie is made with beef and shepherd’s pie contains lamb.

We are loving Coles quick Shepherd’s Pie recipe filled with lamb, vegetables and creamy mash potatoes. This recipe serves 4 and takes 25 minutes to prepare and cook – quick and easy!

Alternatively, check out this low FODMAP and Gluten Free version of Shepherd’s Pie which is very flavorsome.

  1. Spaghetti Bolognaise

A staple across many homes in Australia, Spaghetti Bolognese is a favourite for all members of the family.

Jamie Oliver has a terrific Spaghetti Bolognese recipe that will fill up hungry tummies this winter. This recipe is so easy that the kids can help out in the kitchen too.

Add a side of garlic bread to this Italian Classic to finish off the dish. Delicious!

  1. Apple Crumble

Ok so this one isn’t a dinner… BUT we could not resist adding Maggie Beer’s Apple Crumble recipe to our list. This dessert is seriously amazing!

Using Granny Smith apples and Maggie’s famous Verjuice, this Apple Crumble is perfectly balanced with flavour.

Serve with ice cream or cream for extra deliciousness.

  1. Lasagne

Central Coast local and MasterChef winner Julie Goodwin’s Lasagne recipe is one of the best around. In fact, Julie believes her lasagne is a major factor that lead to her husband Mick asking her to marry him.

This recipe serves 8-10 people so it’s perfect to have on a special occasion when the whole family is around, or to use the leftovers for lunches the next day.

You can use fresh homemade pasta or dried pasta and the Bolognese sauce can be made in advance.

  1. Beef Stroganoff

No slow cooker needed! Woolworths have a classic Beef Stroganoff recipe, containing tender strips of beef, mushrooms and rich, thick gravy. Beef Stroganoff is one of the best foods for winter time. It has a long history, it originated in Russia and dates back to the 19th century.

This recipe is quick and easy with only 10 minutes prep and 25 minutes cooking time. It serves 4 people. It is the perfect mid-week hearty meal that can be served over multiple sides; noodles, pasta, mash potato, chips, rice – basically anything that will absorb that yummy gravy.

  1. Roast Chicken

Seriously, what beats a classic Sunday roast? In our opinion, nothing! The perfect family meal to share around the dinner table, this is a meal that creates lasting family memories.

Women’s Weekly’s  Classic Roast Chicken with Gravy recipe is among the best we’ve found, providing a moist and succulent chicken with beautifully crisp skin.

Best served with roast veggies such as Potato, Pumpkin, Sweet Potato and Carrot – which are all in season during winter time!

  1. Chicken Casserole

Warm up this winter with a simple, five-ingredient Grandma’s Chicken Casserole recipe by Betty Crocker. With only 10 minutes of prep time before placing in the oven, this recipe couldn’t be any easier for a busy week night.
